Students this week participated in a mini lesson designed to help them determine their own level of critical thinking. We also discussed ways that one can continuously improve using this essential skill. Suggestions include being open-minded and using reasoning to reach a logical conclusion. Students also explored some interactives on a variety of subjects.
Students this week are participating in a Socratic seminar entitled Technology, Innovation and Me. It is designed to help students consider how technology has infiltrated our lives and how it directly impacts their learning and life in general. We have had some interesting conversations about what the future world will look like and how technology can help/hinder them on a career path. What are your thoughts on technology? What do you think the future holds for 21st century learners/
Students continue to work on their Genius Hour projects. The format of Genius Hour has the teacher use an inquiry based approach, in which students generate questions about topics that they are passionate about. They are then able to create some form of a project that can be posted and shared in an authentic way.
Students also learned about Leonardo's notebooks. They made observations and looked for ways to apply Leonardo's way of thinking to their own learning. They also reflected on a da Vinci quote and created their own codex. Students have been working on projects that they may post for the Genius Hour Fair. This is an opportunity for students to take on a challenge and get their creative juices flowing. We began by choosing a topic this week and writing questions that focused on the upper three levels of critical thinking: analysis, synthesis and evaluation. We watched an amazing video that helped get us started. Billions in Change is the amazing journey of a philanthropist that is doing amazing and practical things to better our world. It is worth checking out! Students will continue to work on these projects next week.
